Brandon Clarke, who played for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA, has passed away at the age of 29. His agent and the team announced the news on May 13 (local time May 12). The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Clarke was selected 21st overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2019 NBA Draft and was subsequently traded to the Grizzlies. He played for Memphis from the 2019-2020 season through seven seasons. At Gonzaga University, he was a teammate of Rui Hachimura, and with the Grizzlies, he shared the court with Yuta Watanabe and Yuki Kawamura.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a statement upon learning of the news, expressing his deep sorrow. “I am filled with profound sadness,” he said in tribute. “Brandon was one of the longest-tenured players in Grizzlies history, a beloved teammate, and a leader. He played with extraordinary passion and tenacity. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Brandon’s family, friends, and everyone associated with the Grizzlies.”
The Grizzlies also issued a statement expressing their grief. “We are deeply heartbroken,” the team said. “Brandon was an incredible teammate and an even better person. The impact he had on our organization and the Memphis community will never be forgotten. During this difficult time, our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”
During his rookie season, Clarke played 58 games, averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds, earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team and finishing fourth in Rookie of the Year voting.
In March 2023, he suffered a torn Achilles tendon, requiring about a year of rehabilitation. He appeared in only six games during the 2023-2024 season. The following season, he returned to play 64 games, averaging 8.3 points and 5.1 rebounds. However, in the current season, injuries to his calf and knee limited him to just two games.
