The BBC has confirmed that the classic TV gameshow Big Break is making a comeback after a 24-year absence, bringing back the iconic mix of snooker and entertainment. Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry will co-host the revived series alongside comedian and presenter Paddy McGuinness. Originally aired for 10 seasons from 1991 to 2002, the show will now be “reimagined” for modern audiences, blending fast-paced snooker frames with a relaxed, comedic atmosphere.
In the original series, the late John Virro performed trick-shot challenges, while Jim Davidson served as host. This time, Hendry will take over the trick-shot duties, and McGuinness will step into Davidson’s shoes. The show’s memorable theme tune is also set to return. Each episode will feature three contestants, assisted by professional snooker players, competing for cash prizes.
Hendry, 57, expressed his excitement: “Big Break was a unique mix of trick shots and great entertainment. I can’t wait to be back at the table and bringing this incredible show to a whole new audience. Who knows, we might inspire the next generation of snooker players.” McGuinness, known for shows like Phoenix Nights, Take Me Out, and Top Gear, added: “I am absolutely delighted to be a part of Big Break. It’s one of those shows everyone knows and loves, so hosting it alongside legend Stephen Hendry will be something special. Bring it on!”
The original Big Break premiered in 1991 with a young Hendry making an appearance, and it became a Saturday evening staple on BBC One for 11 years. The new series, consisting of 20 half-hour episodes, has been commissioned by BBC Daytime and Early Peak for BBC Two and iPlayer. This revival follows the successful return of other 1990s favorites, such as Gladiators on BBC and Bullseye on ITV.
