In Game 3 of the CBA quarterfinals, the Guangdong Southern Tigers suffered an 88-73 loss to the Beijing Ducks, losing the series 2-1 and missing out on a semifinal berth. Despite a strong first quarter that saw Guangdong lead by six points, they were outplayed in the remaining three quarters, particularly in the paint where Beijing dominated. The deficit grew steadily, culminating in a 15-point defeat.

With Guangdong’s elimination, their preseason championship ambitions have been shattered. Head coach Du Feng and general manager Zhu Fangyu had repeatedly stated their goal of winning the team’s 12th CBA title. To that end, Guangdong made significant investments this season, signing four foreign players and acquiring domestic stars Cui Yongxi and Jiao Boqiao. However, both newcomers have struggled to adapt under Du Feng’s system.
Jiao Boqiao, expected to bolster Guangdong’s interior, has seen limited playing time, often being overlooked in favor of Wang Shaojie. His situation mirrors that of former center Xu Xin, who revitalized his career after joining the Guangzhou Loong Lions. Cui Yongxi fared no better, playing just 13 minutes in Game 3 and finishing with zero points and three rebounds.

Critics argue that the issue lies not with the players’ abilities but with Du Feng’s tactical approach and preference for certain players. Xu Xin’s resurgence in Guangzhou is cited as evidence that Du Feng struggles to utilize centers effectively. As a result, calls for Du Feng’s dismissal have grown louder following Guangdong’s early playoff exit.
With the team falling short of expectations despite heavy spending, it appears Du Feng’s tenure as head coach may be nearing its end.
